Dunmunkle Sump Oilers

Historical Engine Museum

Housed in the historic Wimmera Inland Freezing Works buildings at the East end of Murtoa, Victoria, the Dunmunkle Sump Oilers keep the Richard Hornsby engines, and other, in working order. The society also collects old engines and machinery tractors.

The four Richard Hornsby Engines were assembled in Murtoa, Victoria for an inland abattoir and freezing facility established in 1912. These engines are the only engines of their kind still on their original bases anywhere in the world.

Check out the static and running engine displays that helped develop Murtoa and area throughout the 1900s

Engines will be run on Saturday and Sunday at 10:30am and 1:30pm & 3:30pm
Bring your personal engines and run them throughout the day and enjoy talking about where they originated and their restorations
Caravan parking available
Entrance across from the Stick Shed
Food is available on both days so grab the kids, the oldies and come on out to learn about local history

Restoration Project

Ruston Hornsby 9HRC

Preparations are underway for building an engine base at the Sumpoilers in the Historic Wimmera Inland Freezing Works engine shed. The Ruston twin cylinder diesel, Model 9 HRC engine number 199998 was made in Lincoln, England, and it was originally located at the radio station 3DB, founded in 1925 as part of the Druliegh Business and Technical College Pty Ltd. As part of the 3DB radio station, 3LK was set up at Lubeck, in Victoria’s Wimmera as a transmitter station with the first transmission on 24 December 1936.
